Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation announced in March 2026 a significant expansion of its civilian airspace security program, with a focus on acquiring advanced drone detection and countermeasure systems for critical infrastructure protection.
The new procurement initiative follows a series of unauthorized UAV sightings near airports and government facilities in late 2025. State-owned enterprises and municipal authorities in key regions - including Kyiv, Odesa, and Lviv - will receive funding to deploy radio frequency (RF) detection units, acoustic sensors, and electro-optical tracking systems.
Industry analysts estimate the total contract value could exceed $120 million USD over the next 18 months. Several international suppliers have submitted proposals, with evaluations currently underway.
The move aligns with broader European Union guidelines on unmanned aircraft system (UAS) traffic management, which require partner nations to strengthen local detection capabilities by 2027.
