Protecting a moving convoy from drones is fundamentally different from guarding a fixed perimeter. The threat moves with you, exposure time per position is short, and the equipment has to work on the move, deploy fast, and cover the convoy from all directions.
The nature of the threat against convoys
Convoys face two main types of drones: reconnaissance drones (observation, target correction) and FPV strike drones. Scouts typically operate at 100-500 m altitude, while FPV strike drones attack at low altitude and high speed. Both rely on the same families of control frequencies.
A key complication: the drone operator may be 5-30 km away, well outside line of sight. Jamming the control link alone does not always help - an FPV drone with autopilot may continue on a pre-programmed route after losing the link.
Types of systems for convoy protection
Handheld jamming guns (5-20 W). The operator carries the device and points the antenna at the drone when spotted. Range: 200-500 m, instant readiness. Limitation: requires visual contact with the drone and ties up one operator per device.
Vehicle-mounted systems (20-100 W). Mounted on the vehicle roof, powered from the onboard electrical system. Provides continuous jamming while moving, with omnidirectional or sectoral antenna coverage. This is generally the most effective solution for convoys on regular routes.
Modular backpack systems. A control unit plus several frequency modules, typically 5-12 kg total weight. Suited to dismounted teams.
Key frequency bands for FPV protection
The minimum band set for protection against current FPV threats: 868-915 MHz (ELRS control), 2.4 GHz (FrSky, ELRS 2.4G, DJI), 5.8 GHz (video), and GPS L1 (1.575 GHz). Adding 433 MHz extends protection against long-range control systems.
Deployment speed matters
Time-to-ready is critical. UAVDefen systems reach operational status within 3-10 seconds of power-on. For vehicle-mounted units, we recommend keeping the system in continuous standby mode on any route segment with an elevated threat level.
UAVDefen manufactures both portable and vehicle-mounted jamming systems for convoy protection. Contact our specialists to configure the right setup for your mission profile.
