Site security teams often ask the same question: do we need a drone detector, a jammer, or both? The answer depends on your objective - monitoring versus neutralization - and on the regulatory environment at your site.
Drone detector: monitoring without countermeasures
An RF detector receives the control and video signals of UAVs in the 400 MHz - 6 GHz range and alerts when a drone is detected. Modern detectors can also provide bearing information and identify the device type from its signal signature.
A detector alone is sufficient for:
- Perimeter monitoring with alert-to-guard-force response
- Zones where active jamming is restricted or impractical (civilian sites, areas near airports)
- Logging and documenting airspace violations
- The first layer of detection before deploying active countermeasures
Drone jammer: active neutralization
A jammer creates interference across the relevant frequency bands, blocking the drone's control and navigation. When the signal is lost, most commercial drones will hover in place, return to home, or make a forced landing automatically.
A jammer is needed when:
- You face an active, immediate threat requiring neutralization
- You are protecting a restricted area where any drone overflight is unacceptable
- Mobile teams operate under a persistent FPV threat
The optimal setup: detector plus jammer
Professional anti-drone systems follow a "detect - decide - act" model: the detector identifies the drone, the operator or an automated system decides whether to respond, and the jammer blocks control signals. This minimizes false activations and allows a targeted response, without creating unnecessary interference to legitimate radio systems nearby.
